Teachers’ union backs ministry on holding SPM despite floods

The National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) has endorsed the decision of the ministry of education to continue with the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination despite the deluges that have impacted eight states.

With the oral Bahasa Melayu assessment taking place until December 5, NUTP affirmed that the ministry’s choice to shift students to dormitories was a commendable decision for them to complete the test.

NUTP’s secretary-general, Fouzi Singon, voiced hope that the waters would have receded by the time the written SPM examination commences on January 2.

“NUTP wholeheartedly backs and values the foresight demonstrated by the ministry of education and the Malaysian Examination Board. We aspire that this matter does not evolve into a controversy,” he stated in a press release.

SPM candidates impacted by the floods have been moved to hostels or alternative examination venues to ensure they can take their exams as planned.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek mentioned yesterday that the ministry would contemplate rescheduling the SPM examination to a time outside of the monsoon season.

Her predecessor, Radzi Jidin, had suggested conducting a second SPM session for candidates affected by floods.

Nonetheless, education director-general Azman Adnan later indicated that postponing the examination was unnecessary as the ministry had provisions in place for students impacted by the floods.

He also noted that the SPM timetable had already taken potential flooding into account.
