The government will not reverse its decision to scrap the UPSR primary school and PT3 secondary school exams, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek told the Dewan Rakyat.
Instead, the government is now focusing on improving the Unified Secondary School Examination (UASA) system for sixth and third grade students. Fadhlina said that the UASA, a school exam conducted at the end of the school year, was designed to reduce students’ anxiety compared to national exams, she said.
UPSR and PT3 were canceled in 2021 and 2022 respectively, “The government will not change this decision,” he said, closing the budget debate. “The UASA process is good for students and reduces stress because it is a low-level test. We request everyone to give UASA time. “We are working to improve it and it will be a better system for assessing students’ overall ability,” he said.
He was responding to a question from Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis (Warisan-Kota Belud) about concerns that students are not taking the end-of-year academic exams lightly.
Fadhlina said UASA follows the ideas outlined during the Global Education Forum in South Korea in 2015, which focuses on improving learning through continuous school research that includes not only academic skills but also personal and social development.
